"when I was about four years old...
...the owners of the ranch adjoining ours allowed my sister and me to fish one of their ponds while our parents were visiting. we were outfitted with cane poles with hooks and bobber, and a small broom. the broom was for swatting grasshoppers we used for bait.
i was shown how to put them on the hook, stick the pole out over the water so the bobber was floating, then jerk the pole up when the bobber disappeared underwater.
the insects were plentiful in the weeds along the pond's edge, and the bluegills ate every one we could get on a hook, so i stayed busy baiting our hooks and then releasing the bluegills.
i don't remember that we actually kept any of the fish, but i do know we were having so much fun catching them the adults finally had to come out to get us late that afternoon."
